Admissions
Finding the right school for your child is a critical decision and we appreciate that you need as much information as possible.
If you are considering applying for a place for your child at Woodbury please refer to our Admissions policy in the first instance. To arrange a visit please contact the school office on 01395 232614. Miss Pyle (Head of School) Mrs Simpson (Assistant Head EYFS and KS1) or Mrs Vernon (Acting KS2 Assistant Head Teacher) will be delighted to show you around so that you can see the high quality of our provision, our happy and motivated children and get a feel of our ethos and values.
Policies: You can find our Admission Policies below, these are reviewed annually with each academic year having its own policy document with details on how to apply for a place.
Admissions Procedure
Admission into the Foundation Class
If you would like to apply for a place in Foundation for the beginning of the school year, you must make a formal application to the Local Authority. For the normal round intake into school, children are offered to start in Foundation at the beginning of the September term after their fourth birthday. (children who are admitted to a vacancy at any time after this point are called ‘In-Year Admissions’)
Tour dates and times will be published on our website in the autumn term. Please call the office to let us know you will be attending on, 01395 232614.
The next year of Foundation entry should be made at:
www.devon.gov.uk/admissionsonline.
Please refer to our policy and call the Admissions team if you have any queries. If you cannot apply online, or have missed the closing date, please phone the Admissions Team on 0345 155 1019.
Admission During the School Year or for Year 1 – 6 Children
If you require a place for your child to start at a time other than at Foundation, you will need to make a formal application to the Local Authority as an 'In Year Admission' through:
www.devon.gov.uk/admissionsonline
If you wish to make, or support, your application on religious grounds, you must complete a supplementary form. The completed forms can be submitted by email to admissions@devon.gov.uk, or by post to the School Admissions Service, Room L102, County Hall, Exeter, EX2 4QG. It is helpful if you also let us know that you are applying for a place.
How Places Are Allocated
The Local Authority co-ordinates admissions for primary schools. If there are fewer applications than places then no application will be refused. If however there are more applications for our school than places, the governing body will prioritise these according to the over-subscription criteria as detailed in our Admissions Policy, see below. The Local Authority will then look at all applications and offer a place at the highest preference school which has spaces.
Appeals Process
Should an application be refused, parents have a statutory right of appeal, within 28 calendar days of refusal to admit, to an Independent Appeals Panel. This will review the decision and will decide whether the refusal was justified on the grounds that the school was full. Even if the Appeals Panel agrees that the school was full, it will also consider the impact on the child and family and may still award a place at the school. Appeals at the normal round of admissions to Foundation will be heard within 40 school days. In-Year admission appeals must be heard within 30 school days. Appeals are not heard face to face but by remote access. If this is not possible decisions will be made on written information submitted.
The appeals process is detailed at School Appeals
We organise our Foundation and Key Stage One children into classes of 30. This is the legal maximum number of children allowed in a Key Stage One class with one qualified teacher. There are very limited exceptions which would allow a school to exceed 30 children in a Key Stage One class. Any appeal for a place here is subject to Key Stage One or Infant Class Size Legislation; a more limited form of appeal.
Waiting Lists
A child refused a place will be automatically entered onto a waiting list for vacancies. This will be kept either until a place is available or the parent no longer wishes to stay on the waiting list. Lists are kept in over-subscription order and are not affected by the length of time a child has been on the list. A child’s place may rise or fall on the list as places are offered and new applications are made. The waiting list will be administered by the County Admissions Team with a copy being held here at the school. If you wish to remain on our waiting list, let us know at regular intervals, for example termly.
